Boogixote Q&A: Alex Underwood

Alex Underwood is about as easy a guy to get into a groove with as laying down the needle on a James Brown record.

I’d seen him in and around Saxapahaw, North Carolina at a couple different gigs, with with a mic, guitar, and his guitar case open and available for tips. His music certainly conveyed chilled with Grateful Dead, Stevie Wonder, Dave Matthews Band covers, intermingled with his own free-spirited renditions of original music from the band he’s in, Greensboro’s Loose Connection.

I certainly felt the chill, but what I heard underneath the good vibes was a talented six-stringer who could build a groove around him, sing with heartfelt emotion, and create a welcoming atmosphere, for jams and audience alike. In meeting him and working with him over the next couple weeks to get him lined for Boogixote’s Haw River Assembly benefit concert series Hawesome, I’ve been able to enjoy the affable, sincere guy who brings as much heart to playing music as he does to raising a family and teaching children.

Loose Connection is slowly building a grassroots following that is seeing new buds and blossoms in Underwood’s repertoire. The band has two albums to its name, including latest release, Preheated, with Underwood writing many of the songs as their lead singer and rhythm guitarist, including lovey-dovey groove machine “Diamonds & Jetplanes.” Underwood is filling up gaps from Loose Connection with an increasing amount of solo acoustic gigs, including Hawesome on June 22.
